A Very British Brothel follows the day-to-day lives of the mother-daughter pair who are the owners of City Sauna in Sheffield located on the steel city’s “golden mile of sex”. Kath is proud to run the massage parlour In one tough-to-watch scene Kath has to deal with the remnants of a jacuzzi full of vomit, fish and coleslaw after a customer visited City Sauna with a food fetish. Despite their involvement in the sex industry, both are proud of their business choice to run the parlour. Kath says: “All I ever wanted to do was own a massage parlour. “My ex father in law used to run one and I used to help him and it’s something different.” Kath says whatever happens upstairs is nothing to do with her Jenni adds: “I would never lie about where I work. It’s mine and me mums and I’m so proud of it.” Business owner Kath says that whenever she tells people what she does they assume it’s “sleazy and dirty” but she insists the parlour simply “provides a service, company for the gentlemen, and companionship. It’s like a friendly family atmosphere”. Even though Kath has an entertainment license from Sheffield Council, it is illegal for her to profit from any sexual activity on the premises, instead making her money from door money and percentage cuts from the girls’ massages. She says: “What goes on up there is nothing to do with me. Nothing whatsoever.” Kath’s daughter Jenni helps run the family business Self-confessed nymphomaniac Anna, work works at City Sauna, is happy to show her face to the cameras and boasts about how much she loves her job.
